Welded open grid decks are a great solution when weight is of the utmost concern. Weighing as little as 17 Lbs/SF, open grid decks are primarily used on moveable bridges and older bridges that can no longer withstand a heavy dead load. They can be welded directly to the supporting members, or bolted down with plates. Galvanization is recommended to prevent the members from corroding.
As you can see from the pictures below, IDSI offers both a rectangular and diagonal grid pattern. The diagonal grid deck is slightly more expensive than its rectangular counterpart, but it offers a smoother ride for vehicles and more efficient load distribution.
You will also notice that IDSI offers a modified crossbar system for both the diagonal and rectangular grid decks. The modified crossbar is a deeper crossbar that has proven to increase the durability of open grid deck systems.
